The cars were chosen for intensive testing from the pool of more than 300 distinguished publication tests every year. The evaluations made by the editorial staff and the Kelley Blue Book data considered these cars to be the élite choice for families searching for a quality automobile.

The publication's editors searched for the following factors during their study: comfort, space, convenience, safety, and child-safety-seat fit. Overall, sixteen vehicles made the list. This included seven crossovers/SUVs, three minivans, and six sedans. Honda was the biggest winner. Six of its models made the top list, while three Chevrolet models made the list.
